‘Allah loves you regardless’. Major Project-Final year University project 2019/2020.
‘Allah loves you regardless’ was my final project during the final year of my Illustration degree. This project uses Arabic lettering, Quranic script, collage, mixed media and screen-printing to explore the early understanding of my Islamic faith.
This work started as an expression of defence against the Western prejudice of Islam. The Arabic work for ‘her’ is a prominent theme which is repeated across multiple prints, emphasising the empowerment Islam gives its sisters, contrary to the Western narrative. Multiple Quranic passages are intertwined through the work discussing divorce rights, inheritance rights, and general equality between the sexes.
Mercy is another theme encompassing this project, expressing and emphasising how often Allah is called the most merciful is a combat to the general idea of Islam being repressive and unforgiving.
This project holds a special place in my heart as it was the first time I began unpacking identity, more so in a foreign country which still has its deep prejudges against my faith. I believe this project is the foundation to all the work I have made since and continue to make. (2019)
